Jeff Cán Xicay (2004) is a Kaqchikel visual artist originally from Patzicía, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. His practice develops from the traditional textile craft, exploring its material and symbolic dimensions from a contemporary context.
“If you hear me speaking my language, if you see me wearing my Maya clothing, if you see me cultivating our garden or expressing my culture, and it makes you uncomfortable, perhaps you are on the wrong side of history. Because speaking my language, wearing my culture, cultivating our land, and living as Maya are also forms of resistance.”
— Grandmother Xhiv, Maya Ixil
— Abuela Xhiv, Maya Ixil
